How to Learn Greek successfully

Greek is a very great language to learn. People who are not native Greek speakers must immerse themselves in Greek-speaking environments if they want to speak Greek well and be successful.

Learn the basic reading and listening abilities of Greek.

Spend at least one hour daily listening to news or discussion programs in Greek. It's hard to understand Greek news and programs you first begin to listen to them, but step by step you'll get used to the speed and tone of Greek speakers. Then you can get a general idea of what they are talking about, although you can't get al the detail. You don't need to listen to the radio for an entire hour on one occasion. It's best to spend 20 or 25 minutes on listening on separate periods of time.

Spend more than three hours each day on reading Greek news or articles on the internet or newspapers. Reading builds up your Greek vocabulary, idioms, phrases, and helps you learn concepts of Greek structures. Doing sufficient reading will save you a lot of time because you will not need to use more time on memorizing your Greek vocabulary or grammar. Read out loud when you do your Greek reading this will help you improve your pronunciation at the same time.

Learn the Greek phonetic alphabet (pronunciation symbols). This can help you pronounce Greek words properly, and it's crucial to speak with the correct tone if you want to make some friends with native Greek speakers. This is a very important for non-native Greek speakers.

Make some Greek speaking friends and write them at least once each day. The best way to improve your Greek writing is to practice writing as much as you can. The more you write Greek articles the more you learn and acquire how to use what you've learned from reading and listening.

Make friends with native-Greek speakers. This is the most difficult mission because of the difference in culture, but you won’t really master Greek unless you communicate and speak with a native Greek speaker fluently. You have to learn enough Greek vocabulary and have good listening skills if you want to have good conversations with Greek speakers. Remember to ask many questions to carry on the conversation.

Watch Greek TV. TV is the best and cheapest teacher to learn real Greek. You can learn formal Greek from news or talk shows on TV and you can also learn daily Greek from soap operas and comedy series. Be vigilant because too much Greek slang or too many idioms make your speech unclear.

Try listening to Greek Radio stations. Radio is also one of the best and cheap Greek teachers. Since there is no picture, you cannot understand through lips and gestures, you must train your ear to listen to the voice of Greek language.

Use an Greek-Greek dictionary and carry your dictionary anywhere you go. If you find some Greek words that you don't understand, look them up in your dictionary right away.
